How We Started

Hearth & Haven Ltd began because we noticed a gap in the market for design that genuinely understands British homes.

Our founder noticed that most interior designers treated Victorian terraces and Manchester conversion flats like blank canvases. They’d strip original cornicing, remove period fireplaces, and ignore the architectural character that makes these homes special. We saw the opportunity differently. We thought: what if we could enhance these spaces while preserving what makes them unique?

That’s when Hearth & Haven Ltd launched in 2015. We’ve worked with over 350 homeowners across London and Manchester, specializing in period properties, compact modern flats, and heritage-inspired interiors. We don’t believe in one-size-fits-all solutions. Every Victorian terrace has different proportions. Every small London flat has different natural light patterns. We treat each space as its own puzzle to solve.

Today we’ve expanded our services, but our core philosophy hasn’t changed. We’re still focused on helping homeowners maximize their actual living space — not Instagram-perfect rooms that nobody uses. Functional beauty is our thing.

Our Core Specializations

Victorian Terrace Design

Period properties need respect. We work with original ceiling heights, narrow layouts, and period features. Our team understands how to add modern comfort without compromising character.

Small Flat Optimization

London and Manchester flats are compact. We specialize in storage solutions, open-plan thinking, and layouts that actually work for daily living. 400 square feet doesn’t have to feel cramped.

Heritage-Inspired Styling

British design heritage matters to us. We blend period aesthetics with contemporary comfort — original features alongside modern functionality. It’s not about reproduction; it’s about respect.

Functional Living Zones

We create distinct areas within open-plan spaces. Working from home? Entertaining? We design zones that work together without feeling chaotic or cramped.

Light & Layout Solutions

Dark Victorian basements? Odd-shaped living rooms? We solve for natural light, clever furniture placement, and layouts that make sense. Every angle gets attention.

Color & Material Strategy

We’re particular about paint colors, fabric choices, and finishes. The right material can make a small space feel larger. The wrong color kills natural light. We don’t guess.

How We Work

We don’t start with Pinterest boards or trend forecasts. We start with understanding your actual life. How many people live here? Do you work from home? What frustrates you about your current layout?

Then we get specific about the space itself. We measure everything. We photograph natural light at different times of day. We identify original features worth preserving and areas where modern upgrades actually improve functionality. We look at traffic flow — where do people actually move through the space?

Only then do we design. We create 2D layouts first, testing furniture placement and sight lines. We present material boards showing exactly how colors work together. We don’t do vague recommendations. You’ll see floor plans, color codes, and furniture specifications.

Implementation matters as much as the design. We work with vetted contractors who understand period properties and modern standards. We oversee installations to ensure the design actually translates to reality. If something isn’t working during build, we problem-solve on the spot.

Our Core Values

These aren’t corporate slogans. They’re what we actually do every day.

01

Authenticity First

We don’t force trends onto spaces that don’t need them. If your Victorian terrace looks better with period-appropriate styling, that’s what we recommend — even if it’s not currently trendy.

02

Function Over Aesthetics

A beautiful kitchen that doesn’t work for how you cook is a failure. We design spaces that look great and actually function for real life. Beauty is the bonus.

03

Respect for Character

British homes have personality built into their bones. Original features tell stories. We preserve what matters and upgrade thoughtfully. It’s not about pastiche or reproduction.

04

Clear Communication

No designer jargon. No vague suggestions. We show you exactly what we’re recommending, why we’re recommending it, and what it’ll cost. You make informed decisions.

05

Budget Honesty

We work within real budgets, not fantasy ones. We’ll tell you what’s worth the investment and where you can save. We’ve got solutions for every price point.

06

Sustainable Thinking

We consider longevity. Quality materials that’ll last 15 years instead of trends that’ll feel dated in 18 months. Good design ages gracefully.

What Hearth & Haven Ltd Actually Delivers

We’ve spent 9 years learning what makes British homes work.

When you work with Hearth & Haven Ltd, you’re getting expertise that’s specific to your home type and your location. We understand the quirks of Victorian construction — how walls settle, where damp sneaks in, which original features are structurally important. We know Manchester’s Georgian flats have different proportions than London’s Victorian terraces.

We’ve also done this enough times to know what actually works in real homes. We’re not experimenting on your space. We’ve tested layouts, color combinations, and storage solutions across hundreds of projects. When we suggest something, it’s because we’ve seen it succeed.

Most importantly, we deliver designs you’ll still love in five years. Not just the Instagram photos from day one, but the day-to-day functionality that makes your home genuinely comfortable. That’s the real measure of good design.
